Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate through the review of the literature the characteristics of the available adhesive systems, considering the application or not of the previous total etching. The knowledge of the structures and the appropriate treatment of the dental substrate are fundamental for use of the conventional adhesives. The self-etchting adhesive systems are a simplified technique that bypass the previous acid conditioning. Within the limitation of this review it can be concluded that independently of the formulation of the chosen adhesive systems, to improve the results, the professional should have knowledge of the adhesion mechanisms, clinical experience, as well as master this technique.
