Social Pediatric Dentistry: one year results of Smile Neighborhood-School project in public child day care centers from Nova Iguaçu

Abstract


The prevention and promotion of oral healthcare programs for babies and pre-school children are still modest. The aim of this article is to present the initial results of the Smile Neighborhood-School project as a proposal of basic care in social Pediatric Dentistry. The parameters used in this research followed the criteria recommended by WHO. The epidemiological surveys were carried out in July 2007 and one year after the start of work, when it was observed that the component “c” had declined from 90.4% to 2.1%, the component “e” decreased from 8.2% to 7.6% and that the component “o” had advanced 1.4% to 90.3%. The project proves to be applicable for simplicity and economy of procedures, and efficient thanks to relevant results achieved quickly.
