The dental erosion as a predominant oral lesion in gastroesophageal reflux disease

Abstract


The gastroesophageal reflux is the retrogrademotion of gastroduodenal contents into the esophagus. Recently, several authors have suggested that patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease can have oral manifestations, as because the reflux can reaching the
oral cavity, and damage soft tissues and/or teeth. The objective of this work is a literature review to discuss aspects of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) related to the surgery dentist’s area, involving the mechanisms of genesis of the disease, with emphasis on
dental erosion that is considered the predominant oral manifestation in GERD. According to literature research, it was concluded that dental erosion is a common finding in patients with GERD.
