Abstract

The objective of this paper was to review the literature in order to obtain more information about the etiological factors, the correct diagnosis and possible treatment of cervical dentin hypersensitivity. It can be concluded that the loss of enamel or crown root exposure
for loss of periodontal structures is the main cause of dentin hypersensitivity, and improper brushing, diet rich in acids, excessive occlusal forces, deleterious habits, abrasion, erosion and gingival recession are the most frequent etiologic factors. The presence of characteristic clinical signs such as gum recession, root exposure and abfraction facilitate the correct diagnosis. Treatment options include the use of potassium nitrate, fluoride compounds, desensitizing toothpaste, and even low power laser.
