Perception of health and oral health in an elderly population in city of Araruama/RJ
Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess people’s understanding about their oral health and their expectations about the future. Qualitative and quantitative research conducted through interviews with 24 elderly from “Centre for the Elderly Day” and “Support Homes in the Municipality” institutions in Araruama. The questionnaire responses revealed that 83% of respondents were edentulous and did not associate the lack of teeth to the quality of life. Lack of awareness of basic needs for a better quality of life can be attributed to poor education and lack of financial resources.
