Oral health status of children admitted to the Children’s Municipal Hospital of Imperatriz – Maranhão
Abstract
Objectives: To evaluate the oral health status of children admitted to the Municipal Children's Hospital of Imperatriz-MA.
Methods: The sample consisted of 80 children of both sexes, aged 02-12 years hospitalized for at least 03 days, at the Municipal Children's Hospital of Imperatriz-MA.
Results: The results showed that the distribution of the average ceo-d and CPO-D by age, hospitalized children in the age group 05 to 07 years are the ones that showed higher caries index. The Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S) of hospitalized patients, aged between 02 and 05 years revealed a poor oral hygiene, between ages 06 and 12 there was a decline in the index average. Regarding oral hygiene, most children (75%) performed hygiene during hospitalization, these, 73.75% used toothbrush and toothpaste and only one (1.25%) flossed, but as the frequency, one can observe that 43.75% had conduct once a day, 22.5% twice a day, and only 8.75% reported performing oral hygiene three or more times daily
Conclusion: It was found that the oral health of children hospitalized is committed to a high plaque index and a high caries prevalence in the primary dentition. The oral hygiene does not occur in a systematic and targeted manner during the hospitalization period, with poor adherence to oral hygiene procedures.
Index terms: oral health; dental caries; prevalence.
