Abstract

Due to the development of bleaching therapy, the evalDue to the development of bleaching therapy, the evaluation about the safety of its activity on the oral microbiota became necessary. This study aimed to test the effect of bleaching agents containing different concentrations of carbamide peroxide on the colonization of four strains of mutans streptococci. It was tested the bleaching gels containing 10%, 15%, 20% and 35% carbamide peroxide, in addition to the positive control (chlorhexidine 0,2%) and negative control (sterile saline solution). Most of the samples showed higher sensibility compared to the positive control, being the answer concentration dependent. We conclude that the
carbamide peroxide makes a bad regulation the colonization by mutans streptococci at all concentrations tested.
