Orthodontic anchorage with mini-implants: factors of success

Eduardo Kant Colunga Rothier, Oswaldo de Vasconcellos Vilella

Abstract

Mini-implants are being used to achieve orthodontic anchorage for different kinds of tooth movement. Unfortunately, in some cases they are missed and there has to be one more surgery to install another anchorage device. There are different factors related to the success of this procedure and they can be divided into four groups: characteristics of the mini-implant, characteristics of the patient, surgical technique and post-operative conditions. The most common factor of failure is the peri-implant inflammation, but there are another types of complications that go from radicular lesions to fractures of mini-implants.
