Photodynamic therapy in the reduction of microorganisms in the root canal system
Abstract
Searching for a therapy capable of acting on bacteria resistance to the conventional endodontic treatment, a the Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) has been shown to be very efficient. The It consists in an association of a photosensitizer plus a specific light source, such as low power laser, generating very short and reactive chemical species that, in high concentrations, are toxic, promoting the killing of the bacteria, fungi and viruses. Several authors show the benefits of the Photodynamic Therapy in the decontamination of the root canal. The aim of this work is to make a literary review of protocols used in photodynamic therapy for reduction of microorganisms within root canal system.
