Apex locators in determining the working length: the evolution through the generations

Thaís Medeiros da Silva, Flávio Rodrigues Ferreira Alves

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to review the literature regarding the evolution of apex locators, from first to fourth generation, mainly in their operating mechanisms. There is conflicting information as to which anatomical structure the apex locators from fourth generation detect with greater accuracy. It is concluded that the combination of electronic and radiografic methods is essential to the measurement.
