Abstract

Dental treatment of pregnant patients is a controversial issue, since they temporarily constitute a group of risk due to adverse conditions created by physical, psychological, and hormonal changes that occur in pregnancy. This article aims to provide information and recommendations on drug prescriptions and radiographic examinations related to dental management of pregnant patients, allowing to institute a proper treatment plan and a safe and effective care. A literature search was performed by consulting the databases PubMed/Medline, Lilacs and Scielo. The literature shows that dental care in pregnant women should preferably be conducted in the second trimester, and there is a need for health education to those patients, supporting the inclusion of new habits that will culminate in oral health promotion.
