Variation of brazilian CPOD index in the 1980 to 2010 period

Abstract

This paper consists of a literature review about the values of CPOD recorded in Brazil, from 1980 to 2010, and the fators that influenced the prevalence of caries in the country and consequently the change of the index in this period. Scientific articles were analyzed (from BVS, SciELO and PubMed databases), renowned books on the subject, and brazilian official websites (Portal da Saúde e ANVISA). Reducing the national CPOD showed significant, because the caries prevalence was very high em 1980 (CPOD=7.3) and became low in 2010 (CPOD=2.1). The main reason for this reduction was the increase of the health promotion and prevention actions, especially after the implementation of the Family Health Program, in 1994.
