Abstract

Bruxism is described as an orofacial moviment called parafunction, whose etiology is complex and multifactorial. This study aimed to facilitate the understanding of the possible causes of this disorder and its relationship with the central nervous system, through a literature review. Clark Rugh and Handelman (1980), Vanderas (1999) and Seraidarian (2006) affirm the hypothesis of bruxism be mediated centrally, making the emotional stress and anxiety are important factors for its appearance. For diagnosis, polysomnography (PSG) is an important tool, but also due to the onerous cost, few studies were found correlating the PSG and bruxism, is of great importance that more research be conducted on the subject.
