Herpesviruses in endodontic infections
Abstract
Virus infections are common in the oral cavity, and
it’s estimated that over 90% of the human population
presents oral viral infection at some point in their lives.
Not so long ago the identification of virus was costly
and laborious, but with the advent of the most simple,
sensitive and specific methods, such as molecular techniques, the viruses identification has become quicker
and easier in several pathologies. Recent studies have found herpesvirus in periodontal diseases and perirradicular endodontic lesions, but it’s not clear yet the role of these microorganisms in such diseases. Additional studies are needed to establish the role of these and other viruses in the pathogenesis of oral cavity diseases.
