Clinical and metabolic effects of non-surgical periodontal therapy in diabetic and non-diabetic patients - literature review

Abstract


Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate through literature review if non-surgical periodontal therapy has benefits for type 2 diabetic patients. Material and Methods: It was selected scientific articles published between the years 2008 and 2014 were selected from MEDLINE, PUBMED and LILACS databases using as key words: type 2 diabetes, periodontal disease, glycemic control and periodontal treatment. Results and Conclusion: From the studies reported in this review it can be concluded that diabetic and non-diabetic patients undergoing non-surgical periodontal treatment showed improvement in all clinical periodontal vestments. However, the effect of periodontal therapy on systemic parameters remains controversial.
