EFFECTS OF SIMVASTATIN AS SUPPORTING IN THE TREATMENT OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE INDUCED IN RATS
Abstract
Periodontal disease (PD) is a multifactorial disease whose main signs are the insertion loss of attachment and alveolar bone. It has been revealed that statins could stimulate bone formation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of simvastatin in adjuvant treatment of PD. 36 rats were divided into two groups, Control, who received saline orally; and Simvastatin who received simvastatin. After 24 hours, the PD was induced in animals using a cotton thread in the first lower left molar. After 7 days, the animals were treated with scaling and root planing. They were euthanized at 7, 15, and 30 days, and radiographic analysis demonstrated less bone loss in animals treated with simvastatin.
